Jews of Suriname

You probably never heard of it. Suriname is the smallest nation in South America, smaller than Washington State. But it is also also home to one of the oldest Jewish communities in the Americas.

  1. I am sure most of us have heard of Surinam, as it was originally called: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suriname

    and there are millions of hits on google, so it is hardly a mystery!

    Moreover, we have had extensive discussion on this subject on the Jewishgen Discussion Group in November 2007 {see message archives using keyword Surinam}. The discussion {in depth} centred on which was the oldest synagogue in the area. I recommend researching the message archives.
